Win York Simcoe vs Lakeshore Challenge

It was a roller-coaster season for the Master Mortgages Minor Bantam AE team. A move to the York Simcoe league highlighted what turned out to be an exciting and successful 2013-2014 campaign. The boys proved that hard work beats skill. Lead by Head Coach Rob Macgregor, Assistant Coach Danny Whitters, Trainer Max Warmuth and Manager Heather Connors, the team who finished in 7th place in the York Simcoe league (going 6-1 in their final 7 games) ended up beating out Napanee, Newmarket and Stouffville to advance to the York-Simcoe finals! Plumbing & Parts Home Centre Atom A Minor Generals

The Plumbing & Parts Home Centre Atom A Minor Generals continued their impressive tournament play with a Gold Medal Championship performance in the Vic Teal Memorial Tournament in St. Catharines. This Gold Medal performance adds to the previous 2 Silver medals that the team won earlier in the season. Oshawa was moved into a combined AA, A, AE pool in the Vic Teal Memorial Tournament. The Gold Medal Winning Oshawa team played well in every game of the tournament. Oshawa started off playing Barrie, and outshot Barrie by a large margin, but the Colts ended up as 4-3 victors as 3 Oshawa goals were waived off. The Atom A Generals then went into overdrive with convincing wins of 9-3 over Vaughan A, 6-4 over the Amherst Knights AA team, and 5-0 over the Wheatfield Blades AA team. This earned the Atom A Generals first place in their pool and a birth in the finals against the Wheatfield Blades AA Team. Oshawa battled hard, controlling the game from start to finish and won the Gold Medal Game 4-1. Oshawa was led by the goaltending duo of Bennett Elmhurst and Brennon Ouellette. The offensive performance in the tournament was led by Nathan Jackman with 2 goals and 8 assists. The boys played a Round Robin format during the weekend at the Nottawasaga Inn Arena. On Friday morning, they met the Oakville Rangers. It was a low scoring affair with the Oshawa Minors pulling out a win, 2-1. Congrats to goalie, Eamon Callaghan for being player of the game. In the afternoon, the boys played the Clarkson Hurricanes. It was a tough game for the tykes, and unfortunately, the final score was 5-1. Luke Hill, defenceman, played a great game and was voted player of the game. Saturday afternoon, Oshawa played their final opponent of the tournament, the Brampton 45s. The boys had an impressive win as the final score was 5-2. Congratulation to Ty Wilson, defenceman, for being player of the game…a special birthday present! With this win and the Oakville-Clarkson tie game, it propelled Oshawa into the finals against the Clarkson Hurricanes. On Sunday morning, the boys looked determined to win. With a strong offensive push from Tucker Williams, who scored a hat trick, and an equally strong performance from netminder, Holden Ranta, the team took the championship. The final score was 6-3. After an inspirational introduction from the staff at Simcoe Hall, the boys showed the same hard work and dedication that has become the hallmark of this team and has lead them to a 9-9-3 record and a 3rd place standing in the ETA East.

A Letter from Owen Sound…

At Oshawa Minor Hockey we strive to develop skilled players who will succeed both on the ice and off. Beyond the rink, we hope to instill a sense of honour, fair play, and values that build character and lead to success. It is a team effort involving managers, coaches, volunteers, and many others behind the scenes. As such, we take great pride when one of our players graduates to Junior Hockey and we receive positive feedback about that player and our program. The following letter was received from the GM of the Owen Sound Attack, Dale DeGray (an Oshawa Minor Alum), with regards to Ryan Heeps who was recently drafted in the 3rd round of the OHL Priority Draft…

Letter from Dale DeGray, GM of the Owen Sound Attack

Thank you to all members of the Oshawa Minor Hockey Association for your dedication and commitment to excellence, and congratulations to Ryan Heeps and his family!

Minor Midget A Wins in Detroit

The Oshawa Minor Generals Minor Midget A team emerged as champions after a controversial finish to the Motown Cup Tournament Series played from October 25-27 in Detroit. The tournament started Friday night with a 3-2 win over the Westland Icehogs. After a 3-1 victory over the Nitro Hurricanes on Saturday, Oshawa set up a rematch with Westland for the championship with a 3-1 defeat of the Redford Royals on Sunday morning. In the championship game, Oshawa was leading 2-0 late in the third period when questionable calls by the referees led to a two-man advantage for Westland. Capitalizing on their good fortune, Westland proceeded to score two goals to send the game into overtime. Five minutes of exciting overtime action did not produce a winner, so the championship game went to a shootout. Unfortunately, three of Oshawa’s best players were ineligible for the shootout, according to US Hockey rules, because they were in the penalty box for 10 minute majors. Again, Westland capitalized on their good fortune to win the shootout on their fifth and final shot. However, tournament organizers overturned the final result when it was discovered that Westland had used an ineligible player that was under suspension. Despite battling fatigue, momentum, questionable referee calls, and suspect rules, the Minor Midget A team was triumphant; they played with class and integrity, and they can hold their heads high.

Midget AA Wins Philadelphia Fall Classic

The Oshawa Minor Generals Midget AA team recently returned from the Philadelphia Fall Classic Tournament after winning the gold medal and posting an impressive 5-0 record. The team posted convincing victories of 6-0 vs. the New Jersey American Eagles, 5-0 vs. the New York Long Island Rebels, 6-4 vs. the Pennsylvania Johnstown Jets, and 7-2 vs. the Southern Connecticut Stars before clinching the title with a 4-1victory against the Johnstown team in the Championship final game on Sunday. Head coach Andy Black stated, “It was great to see the team come together and show the U.S. teams what Canadian hockey is all about.” Team captain, Christian stated, “Becoming a team is a lot more than just on the ice! The 10 hour bus ride allowed each of us to get to know each other and help build the hockey bonds that carried on, on the ice.” Team Manager, Mike Todd stated, “The tournament was wonderful exposure for our players and they performed well, but we aren’t taking anything for granted and are going to continue to practice, play and prepare for our next tournament in Chicago!”

Bantam AA Wins Silver in Philadelphia

On Thursday night the team and parents took in the Flyers/Rangers NHL game from a private suite. It was a great game with great seats. After the game the boys were fortunate enough to attend the “friends and family” room and have a chat with New York Ranger Dominic Moore. We chatted about hockey, fitness, life and education. A great treat for the kids. On Friday, the Bantam AA team defeated the Reston Raiders 4-3. A late surge in the game saw Oshawa score 2 goals in the third to take the win. Strong goaltending by Jack Michel in the third preserved the win. Saturday at noon, the Generals played the Rochester Americans and rode on the back of Noah Crosina’s shutout to a 3-0 win. Saturday night the W.B. White Insurance Bantam AA team defeated the Rebels by a 5-1 score. In the Championship game, the Reston Raiders defeated the Bantam AA boys in a hard fought final 2-1. A late charge by the Generals fell short but it was an excellent event for the team from start to finish. Highlights goals of the weekend were Brodie Dunlop with the slapper from the blueline, Travis Buxcey finding top shelf late in game 1, Will Todd going skate to backhand and roofing it and Justin “ Bobby Orr” Wyatt banging in a rebound from the doorstep. We waved the Canadian flag proudly all weekend both at the rink and at the hotel.
