Oshawa Minor Hockey Rolls Out New Development Program Plan
Submitted By Development on Wednesday, April 19, 2017
Oshawa Minor Generals Hockey Association announces a revamped development program designed to provide players and coaches with the best possible hockey experiences.

The development program’s objectives are:

  • To provide a defined curriculum that connects each age group & level with the successive ones

  • To ensure coaches learn and apply appropriate teaching techniques to various age groups

  • To establish a long term goal of higher level competitive teams achieving greater  successes

  • To continue with and build on an active mentorship and support program for coaches

This unique program, among the first of its kind in Canada, is based on the principles of Hockey Canada’s Long Term Player Development model and skills/tactics outlines. It will take a player-centered approach using multiple focal points:

  1. Practice templates specific to an age group and season segment

  2. Season segment plans containing extensive skills and tactics inventories

  3. Monitoring when required base skills and tactics in an age group are taught and  reviewed

  4. Continuing coach education through in-house seminars

  5. Mandatory regular use of small area games (SAGs) and low organization games (LOGs) geared towards specific team/level needs

  6. Access to an extensive list of skills & tactics drill videos as well as content from dozens of coaching seminars and presentations

  7. Active coach mentorship
