Oshawa MHA Coaches Development Weekend a Success
Nearly 40 Oshawa Minor coaches, representing every age group and level, spent the weekend of May 25-27 at the Legends Centre at a unique event: a coaching conference designed specifically for our coaches.

Topics included communication, coaching efficiencies, skating instruction, developing defensemen, creating offense, how to teach d-zone coverage and breakouts, use of assistant coaches, and using small space transitional games.

Organized by Technical Director Richard Bercuson, our coaches listened to a variety of presentations from expert coaches and Hockey Canada facilitators. Included in the 18-hours of conference instruction were three on-ice sessions and one dry pad activity. Presenters were: Peter McBride from the OMHA; Dean Holden, a former professional coach and now a researcher/teacher from Calgary; Gregg Kennedy and Ron Graham, Hockey Eastern Ontario elite coaches and Hockey Canada instructors; and Rick Ladouceur, former technical director for HEO with over 30 years experience at the elite minor and junior levels.

Attendees received points towards their certification maintenance.

The conference, the first of its kind in the region, was meant to complement Oshawa’s development program by exposing our coaches to some of the best teaching practices in minor hockey.
