Some idea’s to assist players to help with Mental Training:
Positive Self Talk – repeating positive statements to yourself prior to performance.
Or repeating key phrases: For example, “Be First”, “Play Smart”, or for a goalie “Play Big”.
Imagery – using all your senses to create, or recreate in your mind a successful event and
imagining the elation that you feel. This should be part of any pre-game ritual.
Relaxation -- replace negative thoughts by thoughts that give you comfort, hope and optimism.
Before or during a game, this helps players who are anxious or nervous.
Controlled breathing techniques -- Take a deep breath, relax and envision something that gives you comfort.
Controlling Emotions – let positive emotions overpower negative ones.
Mental Toughness – being able to withstand adversity and criticism and not become despondent.
Do not take constructive criticism personally.
Goal Setting – set realistic goals for yourself. Write them down and review regularly.
