Oshawa Minor mourns Hockey Legend
Oshawa Minor Hockey grieves
the loss of hometown hockey hero and Hall of Famer Dale Hawerchuk.
Our condolences and thoughts are with Dale’s family.
Dale passed away at the age of 57 following a battle with cancer.
He grew up playing minor hockey in Oshawa winning multiple championships.
After a brilliant minor hockey career, Dale played a year of Junior B for the Oshawa Legionaries which led to him being drafted #6 overall to the Cornwall Royals.
Two years later Dale was the #1 overall selection in the 1981 NHL entry draft to the Winnipeg Jets.
In his first year, he became the youngest player to record 100 points in a season and only one of three players to ever do so at the age of 18. (The other two? Sidney Crosby & Wayne Gretzky).
Some of Hawerchuks remarkable career accomplishments:
- Five time All-Star
- Six time representative of Team Canada including two Canada Cup Championships
- Two time Memorial Cup Winner
- Memorial Cup MVP
- 20th All time in NHL career points. (1409)
- Oshawa Hall of Fame
- Manitoba Hall of Fame
